Quik Pro | round 3
The world’s best riders have surfed 1.5 m waves today at the Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast, at Snapper Rocks and finished the 3rd round of the competition. The contest saw conditions improve for the round 3, with the best performances of event.
This 3rd round really stoked a lot, on the one hand by its tricks and on the other hand by the scores done by the surfers.
Jordy Smith (ZAF) was the performer of the day in posting a 17.17 points heat with nice little barrels, massive turns and aerials. Enough to eliminate his opponent Cory Lopez (USA).
“I was pretty nervous going into my heat, I know how well he surfs (Cory Lopez) and I didn’t want to get stuck behind the rocks. Matt (Wilkinson) and those guys psyched me up and it was fun out there surfing with one other guy” said Smith.
Matt Wilkinson (AUS) put on great heat in that 3rd round. The goofy-footer blasted away at the right pointbreak, with a 9.27 out of a possible 10 along the way. He pushed hard with an almost-completed rodeo flip on one of his waves.
Kelly Slater (USA) took down the wildcard and youngest surfer of the event, Matt Banting (AUS), 16, with barrel-riding, progressive turns and aerials.
Dusty Payne (USA) pushed hard in order to take down local Mick Fanning (AUS) and succeeded, which was one of the bigger surprises on that day.
The forecasts are pretty good-looking for the upcoming 4th round. Event organizers will reconvene tonight to assess conditions for a possible 7:30am (local time) start.
